It's not just you – many of us often take on the emotions and energies of others without even realizing it. As a child and teen and honestly, even in my early 20s, this was my kryptonite. I remember feeling what other people were feeling and not understanding why I always felt so heavy, down, or overwhelmed even when life was good. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that when we can name something that we’re feeling, we can begin to process and understand ourselves better.
Taking on these energies that don’t belong to us is called "emotional contagion" or "empathic overload," and it can lead to emotional distress and burnout. Today, we're exploring how to stay rooted in your own energy and observe rather than absorb the energies around you, leading to a healthier, more balanced, and mindfully well life.
So, we’ll start with how observing, not absorbing benefits our lives and health.
When you start tapping into your own energy, you'll notice a shift in your emotional well-being. Becoming more aware of your emotions and learning how to regulate them effectively is key to maintaining balance in your life (1). This awareness allows you to identify and process your feelings, making it easier to let go of negativity and embrace positivity.
As you tap into your own energy, you'll begin to understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors better. Self-awareness and self-discovery are what I live for! Tapping into your self-awareness can provide valuable insights into how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors impact your life, empowering you to make necessary changes and grow as an individual (2). By being more in tune with yourself, you'll develop a stronger sense of identity and purpose.

By not taking on the negative energy of others, you're giving your body a chance to rejuvenate and restore itself, leading to a healthier and happier you.

Surround yourself with positive influences and remember to take time for yourself, allowing your energy to replenish.

Becoming more aware of your emotions, increasing self-awareness, enhancing intuition, promoting physical health, and avoiding negative energy are all steps towards maintaining a mindfully well life. By identifying common habits that lead to absorbing others' energy and practicing strategies for disassociating and recognizing your own energy, you'll be better equipped to protect yourself from emotional overload.
